Bungles and Bush Fires in the Kimberley

Tucked away in Australia’s northwest are the immense rock formations known as the Bungle Bungles, or Purnululu to the local Aboriginal people. While they were only “discovered” by the Western world in 1982, they have been known to the local people for tens of thousands of years. I had the privilege of visiting these weird and wonderful domes on my trip through Western Australia and the Kimberley region. The campsites are basic, the days are hot and dry, but the stars shine bright.

A Bumpy Ride Down the Gibb River Road

I think my butt spent about 50% of the ride down the Gibb River Road actually in contact with the seat. The rest of the time it was somewhere in the air above my seat, bouncing from the bumps in the road. The Gibb River Road is a 660km road that connects Derby in the west near Kununurra in the east, and it was originally built as a stock route for cattle ranchers in the area. Now, it’s a 4wd road for those willing to take on the adventure through Australia’s beautiful Kimberley region!

So Long, Sydney

Hello world! It’s good to finally meet at last. My long awaited first blog post is here, on the eve of my travels across Western Australia and Southeast Asia. I’m on step zero of my trip right now, sitting on a plane leaving from Sydney for the last time. I’m going back home to America for a few weeks, to go to V.’s wedding, see my family, take home all of my stuff, and finish out my last couple of weeks at work before flying to Perth at the end of July.  Continue Reading…
